Switching trackers

Switching from byAir to FlightDex

byAir is on both iPhone and Android, so you may be switching on the same phone. Either way, the flights you logged in byAir can come with you: FlightDex reads byAir’s export file and adds those flights to your Passport.

How to move your byAir flights

  1. Ask byAir for your data. In byAir, go to Profile → Help → Export data.
  2. Save the email attachment. byAir sends the export to you by email rather than handing it over in the app. Open that email on your Android phone and save the attached file to the phone.
  3. Start the import in FlightDex. Go to the You tab, tap Bring your flights from another app, and pick byAir.
  4. Answer one question. Were you on every flight in the file? If yes, they all count in your Passport. If some were flights you only followed, they go under Unsorted and you mark each one yourself.
  5. Choose the saved file. FlightDex lays out the result before it keeps anything, and you confirm.

Reading the preview

The preview is a full account of the file, not a progress bar. It tells you how many rows there were, how many become new flights, and how many match flights you already have. A byAir file gives each flight’s number, date and route, so a matching row can add little: at most the distance, or whether you were on the flight, and when it does, the row says what it added. Every row that could not be imported is shown with its line number and a reason, and a flight that has not happened yet is one of the reasons you may see. Blank lines are counted too, so the numbers add up to the file.

If the file has columns FlightDex never keeps, the preview lists them by name, so you know what was left out on purpose.

After the switch

Your imported flights are a record, not live tracking, which is why bringing in a large history costs nothing, on any plan. For the flights still ahead of you, add them by flight number. From there you have:

The byAir file itself is read on our server and not kept. Only the flights in it stay, as your history.
