An App in the Air alternative: import your flights
App in the Air closed in 2024. If you saved the export it sent you, a file called data.txt, FlightDex can read the flights in it and add them to your Passport, on an Android phone.
First, the honest question: do you have that file? App in the Air sent it by email when you chose Export Data, and the time to ask for it ended on 19 October 2024. If you never saved it, there is no app left to export from, and FlightDex cannot recover it for you.
Find the file
Look in your email for the message from App in the Air that carried your export, and save the attached data.txt to your Android phone. FlightDex reads the file exactly as App in the Air wrote it, so choose it without opening it in another program and saving it again first.
How to import it
- Open the importer. On the You tab, tap Bring your flights from another app.
- Pick App in the Air as the app the file came from.
- Say whether you were on the flights. FlightDex asks, because the answer decides where they go. If you were on all of them, they all go into your Passport. If some you only followed, they wait under Unsorted until you say which ones you took.
- Choose data.txt.
- Read the preview, then confirm. Before anything is saved, FlightDex shows what will happen to every flight in the file: a new flight, a match with one already in your Passport, or not imported, with the reason. Nothing is kept until you tap to import.
What comes across
For each flight that is yours, FlightDex keeps the flight number, the date, the route and the aircraft code as App in the Air wrote it. The date is the day the flight left, on the departure airport’s own calendar. It also keeps the hour the flight left, in local time, whenever the file’s local and universal times for the departure agree.
What stays behind, and why
- The other times. The file does not say whether a time was the scheduled one or the actual one. The departure hour claims neither, so it is kept; the arrival times are dropped, and FlightDex does not work out a time in the air from them.
- Seats and bookings. Seat, seat class, booking reference and e-ticket number are not kept.
- The rest of the file. The parts about your account, and your hotels, rental cars and expenses, are not kept. The preview lists what was left out, in its own words, never by copying yours.
- Other people’s trips. App in the Air marked whose trip each one was. A flight on a trip that belongs to someone else is shown in the preview with that reason, and not imported.
- Flights it cannot read. A flight with an airport FlightDex does not know, no departure time, or a damaged line is listed with its line number and the reason.
Your file
The file is sent to our server and read there. The file itself is not stored: only the flights in it are kept, as your Passport history. A file can be up to 1 MB.
What you get afterwards, free
Your imported flights stay in your Passport for good, on the free plan. They count toward your totals of flights, distance, countries and airports, appear on the map of routes you have flown, and earn stamps along the way. Importing needs no subscription and no account.
For the flights still ahead of you
Adding an upcoming flight by its number is free. With FlightDex Pro, the app then watches it for you:
- alerts for delays, departure gate changes and cancellations;
- the live map while the flight is in the air;
- a link to the flight that anyone can open in a browser;
- an export of the flights you have tracked, as a CSV or PDF file.
FlightDex is for Android phones only.
Questions
Can I still export from App in the Air?
No. App in the Air stopped operating on 19 September 2024, and the time to export your data from it ended on 19 October 2024. If you saved the export then, FlightDex can read it. If you did not, there is no app left to export from, and FlightDex cannot recover the file for you.
What is data.txt?
It is the file App in the Air sent by email when you chose Export Data: a plain-text file that lists your trips and the flights on them, along with other parts of your account. FlightDex reads the flights and leaves the rest.
Does FlightDex keep my file?
No. The file is sent to our server and read there, and the file itself is not stored. Only the flights in it are kept, as your Passport history.
Is importing free?
Yes. Importing needs no subscription and no account, and the flights you import stay in your Passport for good.
